How to Prep for Your Engagement Photo Session

Once your session is all booked, it’s time to start building your session vision. Getting ready for your engagement session can be daunting! Whether you booked a session with me or another photographer, here are some tips to help you along the way.

The first thing to do once you book your session (or even before you book), is to brain storm photo locations.

This is something you can do alone or with your photographer, but the most important thing is that it feels like you. What type of location fits you and your Partner the most? The beach, forest, city, field or garden? Once you know this, you can go to your Photographer and they should be able to give you some options! Depending on the engagement package, you may even be able to go to a few different spots!

Plan out your outfit and any pampering in advance so you aren’t rushed!

Some may choose to have their hair or makeup professionally done, but that totally isn’t a must! Whether you do it yourself or have someone help you, allow yourself enough time to enjoy the experience before your session. This is just the beginning of a big celebration of you and your love. Keep in mind small details like having manicured nails to show off your ring or having the right shoes and socks picked out - consider setting out all the details the night before. This can relieve any potential stress you may have before your session.

Be early!

Make sure you allow enough time for travel or traffic. The time of your session was chosen carefully to provide the best light - if you are late (especially if it’s a golden hour session), you risk missing out on the perfect light for your session!

Bring an extra change of clothes if time permits, OR bring some extra accessories to quickly switch up your look.

This gives you the opportunity to get more variety in your gallery and maximize your time! Many couples opt to bring one dressier option and one more casual option. Fare warning - be prepared to change in your car depending on where your session is! Its all about the experience, right?

Bring along any props or pups that are special to you!

Your session should scream YOU, so if that means bringing your four legged friend or a bottle of bubbly, please do!  Whatever you want in your photos, your photographer should do their best to make it happen! If you do decide to bring your pup with you (or any pet really), make sure you bring lots of treats and their favorite toys to help them look at the camera and focus!

It’s more than okay to feel nervous!

Please know that no one expects you to be models. Your photographer’s job is to direct you in a way that helps you relax, feel natural, and be your true comfortable selves in front of the camera lens. In my sessions, I especially love to capture candid moments and want you to only focus on each other the whole time! This session is all about you!
